Maria M., an emigrant from Southern Italy, narrates extracts from her life. The authentic tone continues through the film and the story is portrayed by foreign workers. Brought up in a community with entirely different customs, habits and emotionalism, Maria ist confronted with a world in which she encounters little more than coldness and rejection. Her reaction is to sink into an unabating depression. Her inherent joy of life, however, suppressed for so many years, takes every opportunity to break through.
