Ways and Walls
[original title: Wege und Mauern]
Switzerland 1982. 16mm, colour, 113 min.
A documentary film about two men trying to live according to their convictions: a convict set against succumbing to conformity and a gaolor who wishes to do more than maintain peace and quiet and security.
A film which poses questions to a society in which there are prisons, questions to us who punish and exclude, who are punished and excluded, who threaten punishement and exclusion and who are threatened by punishment and exclusion. Not only through prisons.
A film which shows beyond any shadow of doubt that no-one can learn to go his own way independently under pressure or punishment and reward, promises and treats.
In this country, everyone lives under the threat of losing something and runs the risk of losing his identity through the need to conform.
